Xbox 360 games! Three of them, all at once! It's completely unprecedented! It's fully bananas! And they even cross multiple genres, which is always a nice plus. Is there truly something for everyone this week? Well, maybe not, but there's still some sharp stuff out this week.
We've all got our personal favorites when it comes to this week's new releases. Mine's Burnout Revenge. It's weird, I've played through that game three or four times now over the course of reviewing it on the three consoles it's available on, yet I'm still A-OK with playing through it
again. It's the quality online that keeps me coming back. Not having to unlock as many cars online this time around certainly helps, too. As I played this one online a day or two before it hits stores, the messages from people on my friends list kept pouring in asking about it. To them (and to all of you) I say go read the review and decide for yourself! If you've already played the hell out of this game on the Xbox or PS2, it might not be for you. That's understandable, because it's mostly the same game with better graphics.
Probably even bigger than Burnout is the release of Ubisoft's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. It's real pretty, from what I've seen of it. To be totally straight with you, the "tactical" thing rarely clicks with me. Ordering guys around and hiding behind cover and all of that stuff jus
t takes too long, and I'm an impatient guy. I just want to run up and blast the guy in the face, and then move on. And then I complain about how shallow most first-person shooters are these days... yeah, I know. It's complicated. As of this writing, I've played through the first couple of levels in GRAW and think it's pretty cool. Maybe this is me turning over a new leaf or something. But forget about me, read our review for full details from Bob Colayco, whose opinion on the subject actually serves a purpose, since he's certainly no stranger to tactical action.
He's also no stranger to the wonderful world of college basketball, which is why Bob's got double duty on the Xbox 360 this week. College Hoops 2K6 is out. This one has me excited for one reason: points. The full 1,000 points in this game look to be nearly as easy to get as they were in 2K's last basketball game, NBA 2K6. As for the quality of the game? Read our review. I'm certainly not the guy that can tell you if a basketball simulator is any good or not. I'll take the old arcade revisions of NBA Jam TE that had Mortal Kombat characters hidden in there any day.
In other news, there's a multiplayer demo for The Outfit out there for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace. I haven't tried it myself, but that game looks neat. The reactions to the demo seem a little mixed, though. While I was online playing Burnout and GRAW the other night, I kept getting messages from people saying things like "Well, this Outfit demo's boring, so I guess I'm going to get Burnout or GRAW instead. How are they?" It's perhaps a little unfortunate that people would make snap judgments like that about a small multiplayer portion of a much larger game, but there you go. First impressions are obviously still pretty important. But hey, when it comes to buying any game, there are plenty of tools at your disposal. If possible, try it for yourself, then check out our reviews section for some additional guidance, and make up your own mind.
But the most important news of late belongs to Midway, who's going to bring Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 to the Xbox Live Arcade. Considering that Midway hasn't turned out a quality port of Mortal Kombat 3 yet in any of its various arcade compilations, I can't help but be skeptical. Let's hope they get this one right so that I can overtake the world with my unbelievably stout Stryker skills without feeling dirty about it.
