urgo2 daily xBox talk 360
Well, it won't be long now before this just becomes the Xbox 360 newsletter. E3 is behind us, and the real focus was on the 360, not on the "old" Xbox. Considering how radical some of the upcoming Xbox 360 stuff looks, I really can't say that I mind that much.
OK, so what was so great about the Xbox 360 at the show? With few exceptions, the bulk of what Microsoft had to
say about the 360 was squarely focused on new games. There were some announcements there, we saw some games in playable form for the first time, and saw some more games come even further in their development. I'll just rattle off a quick list of the stuff that seemed big.
As expected, Halo 3 was officially announced and there was a brief trailer shown. Not that big of a deal, right? OK, I'm half-kidding. But the big deal is that apparently the trailer is running in real-time and can be "controlled" to a certain extent. So those visuals are at least somewhat representative of what you can expect from the final game, I guess. I thought it looked pretty cool, and hopefully "finishing the fight" entails big-time battles that take place on Earth, letting them do the whole Doom II "bringing the fight home" thing that I hoped Halo 2 would do more of.
Crackdown was one of my highlights of the entire show. This game from Real Time Worlds has a real GTA-like vibe to it, but you play as a superhuman type guy that's out enforcing the law by jumping really high, tossing cars at dudes, and all types of other ill business. Games like these always come down to the mission design, which we didn't see much of, but the world certainly looks interesting. Plus it has co-op!
If there's one thing Microsoft is extremely serious about, it's Xbox Live Arcade. A whole mess of new stuff (and old new stuff) was on display, including versions of arcade favorites like Time Pilot, Contra, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, as well as newer stuff like an all-new version of Lumines called Lumines Live! and a game that played like a generic take on Smash Bros. called Small Arms. Plus Uno was released last week, and Uno is great. Absolutely great. I'm hopelessly hooked on Uno with no signs of escape.
Microsoft opened its press conference with a bang by just going straight to
Gears of War. While it obviously still needs some work, the demo (and the playable time that we spent with the game during the show) makes that game seem like it will be really cool. The cover mechanics in Kill.Switch were neat, but the rest of the game wasn't good enough to hold up. This one looks to take those mechanics and place them into a more compelling game.
I could go on, but I'd never be able to cover everything here. So head over to our E3 coverage index for more and see some of this stuff for yourself. Oh... X-Men: The Official Game is out this week, too. Until next week!
