Count me among the doubting Thomases who had begun to wonder if Final Fantasy XII was ever going to come out. With reports of development turmoil and one delay after another, I'd just about given up hope--until an import copy of the game landed in my hands late last week. Now, once again, I'm a believer.

It was a long, long time coming, but Final Fantasy XII is now out in Japan, and after spending a few hours with the import last week, I have to say that it may just have been worth the wait. This first installment in the legendary RPG series from Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story director Yasumi Matsuno takes the franchise in something of a new direction, with a story full of clashing kingdoms and political intrigue. Also in a first for the series, FFXII reprises the previously seen world of Ivalice from the Tactics games, and it introduces a number of new gameplay mechanics, such as MMO-style battles and the license board, a unique method of customizing your characters' abilities. Too bad the game isn't promised for North America until November of this year...

...at which point you might just be playing it in high resolution on your brand new PlayStation 3. You know what that is, right? For all the latest information on the PlayStation 3 and Sony's plans for the future, the hotbed this week is the Game Developers Conference taking place in San Jose, California. We'll be there with bells on to bring you the latest on the PS3--and every other platform--and you can find all the best stories and videos by visiting our comprehensive hub page. Just like E3, the GDC is a focal point for the industry, such that information will be flying every which way, even from sources who aren't actually in San Jose at the moment. For instance, it was just confirmed that every PlayStation 3 will ship with the 60GB hard drive that was announced as a possible peripheral for the system last week. Stay tuned for more announcements like this one as we demystify Sony's game plan moving toward E3.

Lastly, back to the current generation. I'll admit I was as skeptical as anyone when EA announced its video game version of The Godfather, which was decried by no less than the classic film's director, Francis Ford Coppola. But it looks like they pulled this one out, turning The Godfather into a lengthy action game with a variety of mobster-like stuff to do. Perhaps most impressively of all, the game has a noticeable respect for the source material, allowing you to take part in some of the film's most memorable events without actually letting you muck up the sacred canon. If you've got a hankering for a Grand Theft Auto-style experience with a period feel, The Godfather should satisfy.
