Lumines, Burnout Legends, Liberty City Stories--those were the names at the top of the PSP chart last year. But beyond the small handful of really solid games to hit Sony's first portable device, the lineup was consistently thin. Such a shame that this amazing piece of hardware wasn't getting quite the level of support you'd expect. Looks like all that's changing in 2006, though--the system had strong holiday sales, and all of a sudden we've got more coverage on upcoming PSP games than I can keep up with. Just look!
Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX: The final and by far most crowded installment in Capcom's now-classic Alpha series is coming arcade-perfect to the PSP--and then some. In addition to every requisite fighting game mode you can think of, look for a bevy of ad hoc multiplayer options to round out this comprehensive fighting package. Our new preview's got the full scoop.
Pursuit Force: Yeah, okay, I've espoused the virtues of Sony Europe's wild game of driving-and-shooting-at-the-same-time more than once in this space. Excuse me for trying to tell you about good games! Pursuit Force has been out in Europe for a little while now, and soon it'll finally hit these shores--but the designers haven't wasted time tweaking the game for its American release. Read our newest designer diary to find out exactly what they've done.
Daxter: The Jak series' first portable installment comes not from Naughty Dog but from
nascent studio Ready at Dawn, who seems to be bringing the same entertaining platforming and variety of gameplay to that darn obnoxious ottsel's first starring role. The PSP hasn't had a ton of platformers just yet, but this one looks to help fill that void very nicely. Don't just listen to me, though; the new preview and gameplay videos will give you the full scoop.
NBA Ballers Rebound: Whine about rehashes all you want, but I'm thrilled to see more successful console series making their way onto the PSP. Rebound is a remake of the original Ballers with some of the new features from the console sequel, Phenom, making the jump over. Throw in updated rosters, impressive visuals, and wireless play, and you have a welcome addition to the PSP's sports lineup.
Byte Hell 2000: Talk about your strange import games. This one's got almost no chance of making it stateside, and if it does, it'd have to be radically altered--so if you want to experience easily the weirdest game to hit the PSP yet, check out our new import impressions for Byte Hell 2000. It's like if WarioWare consumed several unmentionable substances and then, I don't know, rolled around in turkey gravy for three hours. That statement makes about as much sense as the game does. Check it!
Ape Escape Academy: I had to include at least one game on this list that you can go out and buy right now. But should you? How has Sony's long-running, quirkily endearing Ape Escape series translated to the PSP? Certainly the concept is sound: how can you go wrong with monkey olympics? Read up on the full review to find out.
Stay tuned next week when I'll once again discuss platforms other than the PSP.
