Microsoft released the first backwards compatibility update last week. It was pretty uneventful, unless you're the sort of person that only plays games with Tom Clancy in the title, because that's all that was added to the compatibility list. And to top it all off, one of the worst games of the last five years, Gravity Games Bike: Street. Vert. Dirt, is still on the compatibility list, but it doesn't actually work! The game starts up and you can hear the sound, but the white Xbox screen never fades into actual video from the game. Maybe that's just a subtle way for Microsoft to say "we made this game better by totally forbidding you to play it." I'm still surprised that recent games like Burnout: Revenge and Blitz: The League don't work. I haven't played too much Blitz yet, but at this point I'd rather hold off and play it on the 360 rather than playing it on the regular Xbox and not being able to transfer my save when it's finally added to the list of working games. And what about The Guy Game, quite possibly the greatest (and by greatest I mean worst) Xbox game ever created? Well, I guess since that's been recalled, it'll probably never make its way onto the list. Oh well. Hopefully further updates are more substantial and more far-reaching in scope.
My Xbox 360 gamerscore cracked 4,000 this week. If you're obsessed with your score, I recommend you rent or borrow a copy of Madden. It'll only take you a few hours to rack up all 1,000 points. Just sim seasons with the Patriots until they win the super bowl, then just sim out the rest of the 30 years to get another 400 fat points. Then play one or two games on the easiest difficulty to mop up the rest. King Kong is probably the next-easiest 1,000-point game, though I haven't played through it yet. I got 900 out of Tony Hawk without really trying. That game's stupidly easy in spots, so you should be able to milk points out of it, too. Condemned is easy and beatable in six or seven hours or so, though you won't get all of its points the first time through (unless you take the extra time to find all the birds and metal and stuff). So far, Ridge Racer 6, Perfect Dark Zero, and Project Gotham 3 seem to be the stingiest with the points. I don't know what it is about PGR3... I really like it, but it's still a little to simmy for my tastes. I didn't expect to get into it at all, but I'm hooked, even though I'm really not all that great at it.
Will Dead or Alive 4 ship this year? At this point, we have no idea. Maybe. Actually, I'm going to say probably. But given the way Tecmo's shying away from announcing a specific date, it's probably still up in the air. I'm looking forward to Game #19 either way. There are still a few Xbox Live Arcade games scheduled to land this year, too, like Wik: Fable of Souls, Marble Blast Ultra, and Robotron: 2084. You know, Xbox Big Guy J Allard once claimed that Robotron: 2084 is the best game of all time. That's probably why we keep getting a bunch of Robotron-like games on Xbox Live Arcade. Not that I'm complaining. Robotron and Smash TV are two of the greatest games of all-time, as far as I'm concerned. Hey J, get Midway on the phone and tell them to hurry up and do Total Carnage, already! Might as well get all of them out there, right?
