The big Xbox 360 games, so far, seem like they're Perfect Dark Zero, Call of
Duty 2, Project Gotham Racing 3, and Kameo: Elements of Power. It's somewhat surprising that all three of the first-party games all turned out so sharp. Particularly the two Rare games, since Rare isn't exactly known for churning out games in a timely fashion... but then, both of those games have been in development for what seems like the last 300 years, so I guess they had to come out sometime. It's a pleasant surprise that they're both so good.
I'm actually not much of a Project Gotham fan. Every time one comes out, I get all excited, because the people that enjoy the series get very, very
excitable. Some of it inevitably rubs off on me, and I think that maybe this is the game that'll get me into a slightly more simulation-oriented driving game. While I always end up enjoying PGR much more than I've ever enjoyed a Gran Turismo game, I still can't hang with it for very long. That's part of why I'm glad that there's a deep racing lineup to work with on the 360. I've been a longtime Ridge Racer fan, and Ridge Racer 6 is a Ridge Racer game for Ridge Racer fans. It doesn't totally re-cut the puzzle or anything... it's just good, stout arcade-style racing. And since the series' roots are actually in the arcades, the arcade-style description actually fits, for a change. Then there's Need for Speed Most Wanted, which I also really enjoyed. The completely ludicrous cutscenes add a completely over-the-top element to what would otherwise be a pretty generic street racing storyline, but the real hook is the open city... which is usually filled up with angry cops that are trying to catch you.
While it's easy to get lost in the cavalcade of news about the 18 games now available for the 360, don't forget about the Xbox Live Arcade. I know, I know, you're "hardcore." You don't like "casual" games. You like your games to be "extreme." Just take a chance and buy Geometry Wars. Then talk to me about "casual." If you don't enjoy Geometry Wars, I have it on good authority that you have no soul. And if you can get more than 30 achievement points, you're some kind of Val Kilmer-esque Iceman that simply will not crack. I'm currently topped out at 261k, which is decent, but the top scores on the scoreboard are just under a million. I intend to spend my holiday break this weekend finding a way to get back into the top five.
For those of you sticking with the "old" Xbox, 50 Cent: Bulletproof is out this week. It attempts to boot in a 360, but crashes at the title screen. So don't get any fancy ideas.
